The Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Pulo Shield has destroyed 748 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta in the last four months.
Media Coordinator of the agency Lt. Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, who disclosed this to newsmen at a news conference in Yenagoa, said 498 suspects involved in the illegal activity were arrested within the period.
He said 545 assorted boats, 26 barges and 18 vessels were also impounded within the period under review, adding that the illegal refining activities were more prevalent in Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states over the period.
Nwachukwu said 51 suspected kidnappers were arrested in the various operations of the JTF to dislodge the kidnappers from their hideouts while seven suspects were killed in a shootout with the JTF.
He said the JTF commenced provision of full security on Port Harcourt – Aba pipeline which he said has successfully reduced the incidents of vandalism on the route, saying the JTF operations have also enabled the PPMC to reopen the Port Harcourt pipeline which had been closed for years.
